What is The Dreamer?
The Dreamer is a regular newsletter offering content that sits at the intersection of: creativity, tarot, magic and spirituality, therapeutic arts, ecology, neurodivergent ways of being, and social change. In it I share writing, resources, and practical prompts, all designed to support you to live a life of self-acceptance, self-expression, and liberation. A life where you create to heal. Because the more us sensitive weirdos learn to thrive, the better our chance of dreaming—and creating—a better world.
In short, The Dreamer is an experiment in documenting and understanding the creative process, the imagination, and one’s internal world, while staying present and engaged with the external one.
Expect conversations around, but not limited to: tarot, creativity, neurodiversity, witchcraft, deep ecology, meditation, mental health, self-expression, social change, the occult, mindfulness, unmasking, art making, spirituality, somatic practices, positive psychology, ethical coaching + facilitation, the human condition, and many reference to art, film, literature, and popular culture.
Who is a dreamer?
Why, you are! Everyone is. Because (even if unacknowledged) inside each of us is a uniquely imaginative, deeply caring, wildly creative, genuinely magical little person—begging for us to let them out again.
A dreamer vividly remembers those small glimmers of flow state, of joy, of self-expression, of true presence, of wholeness. A dreamer got distracted, sure. They let shame, self-criticism, and perfectionism get them down. But they never forgot. A dreamer hurts, but chooses hope. A dreamer takes one gentle step at a time towards creative self-expression and mutual liberation.
Dreamers (as I define them in the acknowledgements of my latest book), are the closeted creatives, witch-curious, would-be writers, neuro-outlaws, chaos agents, bad artists, weird dressers, queer dreamers, shy romantics, dogged survivors, joyful freaks, recovering perfectionists, the rule breakers, and everyone defiantly expressing themselves. Or longing to.
Individually and collectively, we are dreaming ourselves awake.
Who is Jerico?
Hi, that’s me! I’m Jerico Mandybur (they/she) and I do a lot of things including authoring books and tarot/oracle decks, writing, creativity coaching, tarot reading, and I’m an arts-based psychotherapist in training.
My published books (translated into 7 languages) are: Neo Tarot: A fresh approach to self care, healing, and empowerment, Daily Oracle: Seek answers from your higher self, Pleasure Oracle: A love, sex, and pleasure deck, and my newest: Rainbow Power: Manifest your dream life with the creative magic of colour.
My words and work have been featured in places like New York Magazine, LA Times, New York Times, Vogue, The Guardian, Goop, Refinery29, ABC, TEDx and many more. Plus, you might also know me as the creator/host of the now-retired podcasts, Beyond Belief, and the chart-topping Self Service with Jerico Mandybur.
As an multi award-winning creative + spiritual guide, I find great joy and helping people bridge their expressive and magical parts so they can overcome perfectionism, move past shame, and form a new relationship with their voice, their worth, and with the divine (of their own understanding) so they can tell stories, make stuff, and thrive.
In my past work life, I was a journalist/editor and editorial director. My favourite people to interview were Esther Perel (live on stage), FKA twigs (over a coffee), and Kathleen Hanna (on the phone while sitting in a public playground).
But who are you, really?
Oh in that case, I’m a passionate feeler, a romantic thinker, a nature lover, nondualist devotee, animist, and an opinionated but nice person.
I’m autistic and I have ADHD. I’m a queer femme of mixed ethnicity (Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, Rromani, Slavic), a child of immigrants, born in so-called Australia, I live with chronic pain, and I’m a survivor of childhood abuse. And while not without challenging moments and the use of support services, I’ve determinedly built a joyful creative life for myself that I love. And it would be remiss of me not to disclose that I’m a scorpio sun, taurus rising, aquarius moon, an INFJ, and a manifesting generator. I don’t know much about the latter, but I know my type is called the “martyr heretic” which sounds about right.
Why subscribe to The Dreamer?
Here come some reasons now:
- It’s all FREE! And look, while I wont rule out adding subscription tiers in the future. But for now, it’s all free.
- You’ll get a free gift when you subscribe! The Dreamer offers practical resources as well as actionable prompts, different modes of writing (from personal to educational to poetic), and stimulating conversation to support you in your journey of inner self-exploration and creative practice.
- It’s released on Mondays (to the best of my ability), offering you a chance to begin your week with intentionality and inspiration. In each, I share what’s exciting, challenging, entertaining, or guiding me in the realms of creativity, magic, and the mind.
- Dreamers, weirdos, whatever you want to call us; we need to stick together. We need to empower ourselves and each other. We need to make art. We need to defend planet earth. We need community. This is my earnest attempt at cultivating one.
- The Dreamer is still new and being an early subscriber, I want your help to make it as relevant and serviceable as it can be. So you’re welcome to hit me up anytime with your comments, questions, or suggestions.
Land acknowledgement
The Dreamer is created on Dharawal Country. I also regularly walk on neighbouring Gadigal, Birrabirragal, and Wangal Country. As a settler on sacred ground, I acknowledge these sovereign lands were stolen and never ceded. I recognise the violence taken/taking place on them and the resilience of their First Peoples. I pay my respects to the Elders of this place, past and present, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders. I commit to the values of justice, reparations, regeneration, and the thriving of culture and Country.
